Autumn 2008
AUTUMN 2008 PLANTINGS Winter wheat planting was trouble free and over 5 weeks in favorable weather conditions. 5,500ha was sown, in the main with one Challenger and Horst Drill equipped with GPS auto steer allowing for 24 hour working. The total includes 2,000ha brought back from derelict this summer and planted for the first time – see photographs below. All but 40mt was our own saved seed, tested and selected from basic and 1st generation seed grown the previous year. Our winter oilseed rape trail last year failed to encourage us so we have planted 270ha of winter Surepitsa (Russian oil based crop) on previously derelict land and contracted to a local crusher as the small area we planted last year showed better over wintering potential than the OSR. |
